While serving at a weekly Victoria street community BBQ in August 2018, our founder Frank Woods noticed that the crowd was different each time. In conversations with the street community, it became clear that many could not attend regularly. The risk of losing their spot or belongings kept them from leaving, and some avoided shelters altogether because of threats of violence and robbery.
The idea of going mobile emerged, to meet people where they were instead of asking them to come to us. That idea was confirmed when Frank heard a radio story on the way home about how a van had transformed another local mission’s outreach. Soon after, a van was purchased and stocked with food, drinks, clothing, sleeping bags, tents, and essential supplies like batteries, flashlights, and first-aid.
What started as outreach once a week has now grown into three weekly van runs, Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday, that provide both essential and a consistent presence of care and connection with the unhoused people of Victoria.
